Associate Professor Dr. Antonio N. Torralba is a University Fellow and a member of the UA&P Board of Trustees. He is the first and current holder of the Mariano and Estelita de Jesus Que Professorial Chair on Family and Youth Education. He is set to spearhead a wider spectrum of youth character education and family development education programs for the Philippines and the rest of Southeast Asia.

Dr. Torralba holds a PhD in Philosophy, with specialization in Pedagogy, from the University of Navarre, Spain. His more than 50 years in the field of education has witnessed the major roles he played in the establishment of private initiatives, schools, institutes, academic programs, and development programs that have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals across the country. Former President Fidel V. Ramos appointed him UNESCO Commissioner for Education in 1997-1998.

He continues to serve in different capacities in several associations and programs, such as the National Association of Secondary Schools of the Philippines (NASSPHIL), Synergeia Foundation, Inc., Education Governance Effectiveness (EdGE), and Campaign for Character Education Tenacity (CACHET).

Publications

  • Joys of Teaching, Universal-Aperture. (2000). He received the Catholic Authors Award in 2001 (Catholic Asian Publishers) for this book.
  • Several teaching materials, including the basic and nuanced content of Values Education and materials on character-based sexuality education. These were products of his directing youth leadership and character education activities under the I Am S.T.R.O.N.G. – I Keep Love Real Program of UA&P, where he has directly reached some 70,000 students nationwide through seminar-workshops and national conferences organized by the young; and indirectly some 400,000 students through character education publication under corporate sponsorship.
  • A research publication in two refereed journals in the US and Spain on the lifestyle of Filipino adolescents. This was a product of his spearheading of “Love, Laughter, and Life Ever After,” the Second International Congress on Education in Love, Sex, and Life, held in Manila in November 2007. 
  • Co-authored and project directed the publication of Sexuality Education 101, a 12-volume book series for Grades 5 to 12, which translate to curricular textbook format and channel the longitudinal research results involving two to four thousand youth through the years.
  • In 2010-2015, engaged by the embassies of Chile and Brazil in a research project on the impact of street football on the character development of young players from Class D and E communities. This research culminated the “Smiles for the World” photo-essay competition, and a multi-University and multi-embassy undertaking engaging children, male and female, in street football competition.
  • The secretariat was chaired by UA&P, led by Dr. Torralba. The final output of the undertaking was a compilation of papers in a book, entitled Calidad Humana: Sharing the Filipino Spirit, published in 2015 by ABS-CBN.
  • Recently directed the crafting and publication of a teaching and learning toolkit on character-based education in drugs entitled Alive and Well (And Moving On), under the sponsorship of private business.
  • Recently completed an expanded nationwide research on family life and youth lifestyle under the sponsorship of Marriage Encounter of the Philippines.
  • Directed and delivered two papers on fatherhood and child-rearing style in the Philippines and on the impact of the pandemic on family life and education in the country to delegates of the Rome-based International Academy of the Study of the Jurisprudence of the Family (IASJF).
