Module 7: Physical Internet for Supply Chain and Logistics (3 sessions)
Facilitator: Varsolo Sunio
The module provides the participants with an overview of the physical internet, touted as the future of logistics. The physical internet is an “open global logistics system founded on physical, digital, and operational interconnectivity”
The main rationale for a shift to PI is the assertion that the means “physical objects are currently transported, handled, stored, realized, supplied, and used throughout the world is unsustainable economically, environmentally, and socially” (Montreuil, 2011). Such unsustainability cannot be addressed by current paradigms, which only generate incremental improvements.
Introduction to the Physical Internet
Provide participants with an overview of the Physical Internet, including the concepts of digital, physical, and operational interoperability, enabled through modularization, standard interfaces, and protocols.
Overview of PI Roadmaps and Projects
Discuss the two PI roadmaps formulated in the European Union and Japan. We also provide an overview of various PI projects piloted all over the world. We also present how the PI is being implemented in other countries.
Roadmap Architecture: Vision, Areas of Development, Generation/Strategies
Hold a workshop among the participants in which they try to develop a vision and identify the critical dimensions of PI development in their own industry.
